Forcing or pressuring someone to marry against their will is illegal in the UK. It is also illegal to take someone abroad from the UK in order to marry.
Forced marriage is where one or both people do not consent to the marriage taking place.
It affects everyone and some young people are under 16.
Everyone has the right to choose who they marry, when they marry or if they marry at all.
Who can help
If you, or someone you know, is at risk of being forced into marriage, it is important to tell someone you can trust.
You can contact the Government’s Force Marriage Unit (FMU) or the police on telephone 999 (in an emergency) or telephone 101. You can also speak with the Designated Safeguarding Lead at your school.
